The Iron-Cholesterol Connection
Excess iron can increase oxidative stress, a process that generates free radicals which damage cells and tissues. This stress can disrupt how the body processes fats, often leading to higher LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels [1].
In addition, ferritin is not only an iron-storage protein—it also acts as an acute-phase reactant, meaning its levels rise during inflammation. Chronic low-grade inflammation has been directly linked to abnormal lipid levels and a greater risk of cardiovascular disease [2].
When to Be Concerned
Elevated ferritin is sometimes seen in individuals with:

- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
- Hemochromatosis (a genetic iron overload condition)
All of these conditions can negatively impact lipid metabolism, contributing to elevated cholesterol and triglycerides [3][4].
If your lab tests show high iron or ferritin levels along with raised cholesterol, it’s worth having a conversation with your healthcare provider. Additional tests—like transferrin saturation, C-reactive protein (CRP), and liver function panels—can help identify whether iron overload, inflammation, or both are contributing factors.
